Local Hikes with Beautiful Fall Leaves in Des Moines
There’s just something about fall in Des Moines. The air feels a little crisper, pumpkin spice is everywhere, and the trees put on a show that makes you want to slow down and take it all in. If you’ve been looking for a reason to get outside before the cold really sets in, a local hike surrounded by colorful leaves is the perfect excuse.
Here are some of our favorite spots around Des Moines to enjoy the season:
1. Brown’s Woods
Tucked away in West Des Moines, Brown’s Woods is like a little escape right in the city. The trails here are peaceful and shaded, with oak, maple, and hickory trees that practically glow in red and orange this time of year. It’s an easy walk, so you don’t have to be a “serious hiker” to enjoy it.
2. Jester Park
This place is gorgeous any time of year, but fall makes it extra special. Jester Park sits along Saylorville Lake, so you get both wooded trails and wide-open prairie views bursting with color. If you go close to sunset, the sky plus the fall leaves is one of those “wow” moments you’ll want a picture of.
3. Walnut Woods State Park
If golden leaves are your thing, Walnut Woods won’t disappoint. The park is known for its black walnut trees, which turn a rich gold in autumn. It’s an easy spot for a weekend stroll, and there are picnic areas if you want to make a day of it.
4. High Trestle Trail
Okay, this one isn’t right in Des Moines, but it’s worth the short drive. The High Trestle Trail is famous for its bridge views, and when the surrounding river valleys turn color, it’s just stunning. Whether you walk or bike, it’s a fall adventure you won’t forget.
5. Easter Lake Park
Closer to home, Easter Lake is one of the most underrated fall spots in the city. The trails loop around the water, and when the leaves start to change, you’ll see their reflections dancing on the lake. It’s peaceful, beautiful, and right in our backyard.
