Spring is the time of year that makes everybody feel like spring cleaning. No longer are you trapped inside with all the windows closed and cold air blowing through your lungs. The weather is still cold, but at least you can walk outside without wearing a jacket or hat.

Spring is also the time for major home improvement projects. You might be planning to paint your kitchen or make some changes around the house; whatever you're planning, it's probably much easier to get started in spring rather than fall.

So here are four easy tasks that will help get you started on your spring cleaning project:

#1 Deep-Clean Your Entryway

If you've got a small entryway, your floors may have been neglected over the winter. Where have all the coats and boots gone? You've got to get on this now. But first, put down that shovel and give these areas a quick sweep with your hand-held vacuum.

Don't be afraid to use a power tool — an inexpensive broom and dustpan will do the trick. After all, nothing is more satisfying than seeing that little place in your home transformed into a clean, organized space.

Use the vacuum to dislodge salt from rugs, baseboards and any other area where it has been deposited during winter storms. This will help cut down on future damage and give your floors a boost in quality.

Next step: wash off anything that needs it with dish soap and water.* Then use some old towels to dry it all off.

Finally, take some time to vacuum those baseboards and baseboards around doors and windows so you can get those hard-to-reach spots clean.

After that, you're ready for spring cleaning! And remember: By taking care of entryways now, you'll be ahead of the game next year as far as getting your home ready for warm weather goes.

#2 Make an Anti-Mud Plan

It's fun to play in the snow, but staying out of trouble is crucial to keeping your yard from being a winter hazard.

When the ground freezes, water seeps into the soil and can cause all sorts of damage. The worst kind of damage for a home owner is when a layer of ice forms on top of the soil, causing it to break apart. When that happens, all kinds of dirt and debris can get sucked up by the broken-up ground. Water that gets trapped on the surface melts when it warms up, creating ponds and puddles. So if you want to keep your flower beds and lawn green year-round, you need to dig in early and plan ahead.

It's a good idea to research potential ground cover before you start shoveling snow. You need something that will soak up water while also looking nice enough to make a statement in your yard. Consider planting grass along with gravel or decorative rocks around fixed features like trees and entryways. If you have a rain garden on your property, that could be an effective remediation plan in itself — just be sure to fertilize it so it doesn't grow too fast during hot spring months when rains are abundant.

#3 Organize Your Cleaning Closets and Laundry Room

Spring cleaning is a time to clean out and declutter, but it's also a time to put the finishing touches on your home. If you've been putting off spring cleaning, here are some quick and easy ways to jumpstart your motivation.

To get started, organize your closets and laundry cabinets. When you're done for the season, you'll have an organized space where you can store items when they need to be cleaned out or discarded. The same is true for your kitchen cabinets and pantry — you'll be able to easily spot items that need to be tossed and make decisions about what stays longer.

#4 Hail a Handyperson

Hiring a professional to clean your windows, deep-clean your carpets and hand-wax your furniture is a smart move if you're willing to pay for it. Most homeowners are surprised at the amount of time — and money — they can save by having their carpets steam-cleaned or their floors buffed.

But don't be put off by the high prices. As you can probably guess, it's not just a matter of how long a job takes but how much it costs to do right.

There's no ideal wayto gauge how good a handyperson is or how much they charge. The most obvious thing is to ask them what they charge, but that's not always appropriate or helpful. But still, you'll know whether it's worth hiring them again if they gave a price quote that was too low or too high. You can also always reach out to us for our tried and true recommendations of any sort of vendor you might need. And be sure to look at online reviews, after all many professionals will have an online presence of some sort for you to peruse before you hire them.

All in all, it's pretty easy to clean up your home for spring. Just make a plan for what to do first, buy the supplies needed and get started. Just remember to put on some old clothes that you won't mind getting stained. The list of things that need to be completed is long, but they don't have to take too long if you take care of them one room at a time. Soon, you'll be enjoying spring weather in a beautiful home.
